Ulsan Spearheads Movement to Turn Carbon into Cash |
If people were compensated for using alternative energy sources, there might be a large and rapid movement to reduce carbon emissions instead of the current sluggish progress.
This is what the Clean Development Mechanism act of the Kyoto Protocol is aiming at. The program provides financial credits for reducing carbon. The city of Ulsan is planning to join the effort. City residents use solar panels as their main energy source. These panels not only save electricity but also reduce carbon emissions by around 1.6 tons a year. This only amounts to US$18 compensation a year under the Kyoto program. Nonetheless, the city of Ulsan hopes some 120 of its solar-panel users will take advantage of the program. There are an estimated 20,000 households using solar panels nationwide, which could bring the total to $183,000. Officials say it’s a good idea to join a global movement that, while providing immediate incentives to save energy, could also be a catalyst for larger-scale projects in the future. Arirang News |
