Apollo capsules took astronauts to the Moon. A capsule was put on top of a rocket. The rocket was strong enough to send the capsule into space. There was another rocket sitting over the capsule. It was not as strong as the one that launched the ship. But, it still had a lot of power. This extra rocket had one job. It would be used just for emergencies. The rocket could take the astronauts to safety if anything went wrong during liftoff. NASA is working on a new spacecraft. It is called the Orbital Space Plane (OSP.) It will take astronauts to and from the Space Station. It will also bring them safely home if there is an emergency. NASA wants the Space Plane to be very safe. It will be even safer than what is being used now. NASA is testing ideas for the Space Plane. One project is called PAD for short. It is designed to show the best ways for the crew to escape if there is a problem. PAD is not a real spacecraft. It will have a crew section the same size as a real one. Two crash test dummies will sit in real seats. PAD will get power from a rocket engine. The rocket will push PAD into the air. Once it gets high enough, the engine shuts down. A small parachute will open. This will make PAD go slower. Once it gets close to the ground, a big group of parachutes will open. This will let PAD float safely back to the ground. PAD is still being designed. NASA is hoping it will fly by 2005. PAD is being made so that it can be changed. This will let NASA keep testing new escape ideas. PAD is different in one way. The things learned from PAD will be used in an emergency. So, NASA hopes it will never be used. But, it will give astronauts one less thing to worry about. They will know that if something happens, things learned from PAD will bring them back to Earth safely. |
